  about Pulse

The Pulse Totnes Youth Venue is situated at the rear of The Mansion, off Fore Street in Totnes, and is is a Devon County Council funded youth facility.

Pulse is managed by Devon Youth Service. We provide evening and weekend sessions offering a wide range of activities, opportunities and projects, in partnership with other local agencies including Connexions, and we liaise with other agencies, such as Youth Support and Youth Enquiry Services.

Pulse is staffed by a team of experienced and qualified youth workers and support staff: a full-timeArea Youth Worker, 4 paid Youth Workers, a voluntary Youth Worker, 3 Senior Helpers (young people), and two Administration Assistants.

Pulse Youth Venue is open to all young people aged 11 to 25 years, and is a vibrant meeting place that has been decorated and developed by youth workers and young people.

The Venue is well equipped with a great coffee bar area, comfy sofas, kitchen / coffee bar, an internet computer suite, 2 pool tables, satellite TV and Playstations.

Pulse online

Nearly two-thirds of the young people consulted said they wanted a youth website. Here it is!

The idea for a website came about fom a Youth Consultation Exercise undertaken in 2003 for the Market & Coastal Towns Initiative (other current projects include the formation of a Youth Council, and the development of a Youth Café).

This is a website for young people, and young people have been involved in the desgin process from the very start - including discussions as to the style and format of the website, as well as the actual content.

As the website continues to evolve, it is hoped that more and more of the content will come directly from the young people themselves; one young person is currently acting as coordinator / subeditor to facilitate the creation and sourcing of website content.

The overall aims are for this website to be informative, educational, useable, enjoyable and interactive - and at all times for it to feel 'owned by' the young people themselves. (One complaint made by young people is that other youth websites are "boring and don't allow you to have an opinion".)

future ideas ...

funding possibilities are being explored to fulfil ideas and requests not within the current budget, including:

  • secure areas for messages and discussions
(these would be accessed via a membership scheme)
  • extension of the 'showcase' gallery area
  • the formation of a freeform, magazine-style area offering opportunities for online creativity for all age groups

  • training for young people who want to learn any aspects of website building

  • software to enable non-technical users to directly update webpages
  • addition of ongoing online consutation via polling technology, to provide statistical feedback and trends indications

The website you are viewing now is just a beginning!
